How Vanshades does its bit for the environment…

Environmental issues are dominating news outlets across the globe and are issues needing participation from each of us, with companies across the world looking at ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

Here at Vanshades, we are making a conscious effort to be more ethically and environmentally friendly in both the office, our practice and products.

Pete Staniforth, Director of Vanshades explains: “We try to source all our products from the UK as we are proud of our ‘Made in Britain’ approach to manufacturing.

“This means that we pay a little more for our materials but we feel this is offset by a lower carbon footprint whilst ensuring that we can maintain a high level of product quality.”

Our environmental in-office approach includes the promotion of car sharing, using LED lighting in all areas and trying to be as paperless as possible.

When it comes to Vanshades products, we believe environmental impact starts with the manufacturing process.

Pete said: “Due to the design, we understand the manufacturing of our Window Pod products incur a lot of waste, as we essentially cut a big hole in the plastic for the window aperture.

“One of the reasons we specified ABS plastic was its ability to be recycled and effectively sent back to the manufacturer of sheet plastic, in the form of granules.”

To produce the granules, Vanshades have to process the waste plastic through a granulator, this is sold to our sheet supplier – often using the same transport that delivers sheet material – and the sheet manufacturer melts down the granulate before re-pressing the new sheets back to us.

Pete said: “We are proud to be part of a recycled supply chain that uses every scrap of plastic waste, all sourced from the same local supplier.”

In this current climate, Vanshades believe more companies should be considering the impact of their environmental footprint and should be supported to do so by the government.

Pete adds: “I’m confident that we do our bit to run a company that is aware of its environmental footprint. Unfortunately, we don’t get rewarded for such endeavours in the form of incentives to buy new recycling machinery for instance.

“Our granulator costs us £8,000 to which there were no government funds to help with this initiative.”

Fortunately Vanshades, as a business, faces fewer challenges than most, due to our use of recycled plastic.

Pete explains: “We once considered using virgin plastic which is light grey in appearance. Whilst this is aesthetically better, it comes at a cost of being 40% more expensive.

“The costs of this I fear is mostly bore by its impact on the environment.”

As we are forever looking at ways to reduce or carbon footprint, Vanshades have decided to not attend as many exhibition shows next year, cutting attendance from 17 to 3. Rather than driving up and down the country, we are putting our resource and marketing budget into Digital Marketing which will offer a better Return on Investment.

Pete said: “Unfortunately, society, as a whole, has an awfully long way to go in terms of waking up and developing a true conscious behaviour to being more ethical and environmental in all our daily routines.

“Sadly, consumerism is often at the detriment to the environment, but we’re hoping through our company’s commitment to taking more responsibility for our carbon footprint, we will encourage others in the industry to follow suit.”

Vanshades: Take a Look at Our Products

Vanshades: Take a Look at Our Products

Vanshades, as the specialist in van accessories, covers and furniture, is keen on simplifying the design and decoration of van furnishings and equipment, to help you personalise and renovate your wheeled prized possession.

Each piece of innovative equipment we offer provides lucrative solutions that are easy to organise, store and display. Our primary supplies can be categorised as follows:

Window Pods®

At VanShades we have a wide selection of van window solutions, all of which are easy to install, with a pre-assembled blind and frame system which offer stylish privacy.

The classic and contemporary alternative to curtains look like they were purchased with the van, the Window Pods ® achieve a flawless modern finish to windows.

Granted they look stylish, the Pods are also manufactured with blackout and thermal qualities whilst reducing condensation and noise pollution from your vehicle.

Available in 13 variations, Pods can be fitted on any window of the van – on both fixed and sliding doors and windows -and can be acquired with or without carpet coverings.

Recently, we have added our new Window Pods® Select blind system to the range. The Select option is a vacuum formed ABS pod, faced with an aluminium composite sheet and is available in 15 different colours with a wipe clean silk finish.

Pop Tops

Although we are recognised for our blinds alternatives, Vanshades also offer pop top and elevating roof products.

Like our Pods, the Pop Top Wrap products accommodate a special insulated layer sandwiched between the outer and inner hydro coated polyester to keep your vehicle warmer during cooler months/climates as well as cooler in the summer months.

Not only does it provide an extra layer of insulation for your camper, but it also provides a noticeable increase in height for your van giving the illusion of more space and a more homely feel.

The pop top roof is manufactured to seamlessly follow the profile of your van’s roof and structure.

Screencovers

For both personalisation and security reasons, our Vanshades screen covers are available in an array of colours and designs as a fun way of securing your camper’s possessions and blocking sunlight.

Vans are often used as a home away from home or a workplace on wheels, whereby owners use the large space to keep valued assets, so it pays to keep them secure and the screencovers do just that. Both the Pods and the Screencovers offer reassurance that when you’ve parked and left the vehicle, you can be sure prying eyes cannot see your assets inside.

The screencover, which comes complete with its own polyester drawstring storage bag, can be easily stored away due to its compact size (100 x 18cm) cover the entirety of the front windshield and sides of the cabin.

Attachment is simple, by the built in door pocket hung over the outer edge of the door; the screens are secured via Velcro around the wing mirrors and an additional Velcro button to minimise wind movement in all weather conditions.

Splashbacks

Equally as important as external, is your camper van’s interiors. To keep the van looking as homely as possible, as camper vans are used to live in for many, it is sensible to make the van feel as comfortable as possible, with privacy in mind. During the conversion process, there are numerous ways to personalise and make your van more practical.

Like the Pods, Vanshades’ Splashbacks provide a stylish and practical solution to combining a bulky sliding window and a thermal blind, for the window behind the driver.

Manufactured from tough 5mm cast acrylic or aluminium bonded composite sheets, Vanshades Splashbacks are laser cut with polished edges as an on-trend way of completing your kitchen side conversion.

The Splashbacks are available in a wide range of colours and finishes and include your choice of Vanshades Window Pods thermal cellular blinds. The rear of the Splashback is carpeted using Anthracite carpet to prevent light ingress and has a matching blinds aperture cut to the same profile as the Window Pod® system.

ChairPods:

Perfect for a camping adventure, Vanshades ChairPods combine style with practicality, utilising wasted space to permanently store two ultra-lightweight yet comfortable chairs.

The ChairPods are designed specifically for retro fitting to your VWT5 & T6 Tailgate. Its lightweight aluminium frame section makes it easy to slide the two chairs in and out. At just 1.8 kg each, the chairs can support up to 120 kg.

Made of a robust canvass bag, the ChairPod comes ready to fit complete with two ultra-light aluminium chairs which can be removed at any time. Installation is simple, with all necessary fittings and illustrated instructions included.

The standalone camping table is securely stored inside your nearside sliding door of all Right Hand Drive VW T5 and T6 models – manufactured from 2004 onwards. It can be fitted in minutes and requires absolutely no modification to your sliding door.

Manufactured from 10mm laminated birch ply finished with hard wearing 2mm silver colour plastic edging (Size: 840mm x 510mm x 10mm), the table is supported by fold out legs, manufactured in lightweight black aluminium, fitted with adjustable feet.

The Loc8 Table system is also suitable for use in both SWB and LWB models with or without a power operated door.

Camper Van Curtains Ideas

Camper Van Curtains Ideas

Camper van conversions have moved on over the past few years and there’s now some great ideas for alternatives to traditional camper van curtains.

alternatives to camper van curtain tracks

There’s no arguing that curtains do their job as long as that job is closing so you can change your smalls but curtains can fail to provide the most basic of functions:

  • quick and easy- they are usually fiddly to close and can get in the way.
  • thermally efficient – they don’t keep you warm in winter and cool in summer and they do often soak up condensation and go mouldy.
  • blackout qualities – they sometimes let in the light when you want stay asleep.
  • look great – curtain-lovers may disagree but they look dated and those unsightly tracks!
  • easy installation – let’s face it, installing curtain tracks isn’t a satisfying use of a weekend.

So what’s an alternative idea for camper van curtains?

NO CURTAINS!

Sorry what did you say?

Hang on we’ve not gone mad and yes we did just say “NO CURTAINS”.

The thing is, we couldn’t seem to find what we wanted, a great looking, stylish, modern, thermally efficient alternative idea for camper van curtains so, we thought outside the box and invented a completely new window blinds system.

Our system solves all of the shortcomings of camper van curtains:

  • they are quick and easy to use
  • they are thermally efficient
  • they are available in blackout and thermal
  • they look great, they’re modern, sleek and stylish
  • they are very easy to install in as little as an hour or less!

Introducing the VanShades Original WindowPod® system.

Designed and developed in the UK and made from automotive grade ABS plastic, VanShades WindowPods® are pre-installed with high quality blinds that are available in a wide range of colours and designs. Currently available for VW T5 (and other makes/models soon), the VanShades WindowPod® system is The Original, The Best and The Only WindowPod® blinds system on the market today. WindowPods® are loved by their owners, you can read what they say about them at our VanShades Facebook page.

What are the modern alternatives to camper curtains?

What are the modern alternatives to camper curtains?

When planning your camper van conversion you will at some point have to consider ideas for which window dressings you’re going to choose but what are the modern alternatives to camper curtains?

The importance of your camper windows and the dressings that you choose for them is sometimes overlooked. Your windows and their dressings need to not only look fabulous because after all, you’ve probably spent a considerable amount of money converting your van, they also need to perform well too.

Window dressings perform a number of key functions:

  • to let light in during the day
  • to keep light out when you’re sleeping
  • to keep you warm when it’s cold
  • to keep you cool when it’s hot
  • to provide easy access to privacy
  • to look good

Until recently, it’s been a hard job to find good stylish alternatives to curtains, there have been a number of roller and sliding type solutions but they’ve never quite delivered that high-end fully integrated and modern “limo-look” or “tour-bus” quality that you’ve been looking for in an easy to install or retro-fit package.

Now let’s not be too hard on the humble curtain, they have been a fairly maintenance free reliable solution for a very long time and they do kind of “get the job done” but, there’s the problem, they’ve been around for a very long time and they do come with the problem of those ugly curtain rails or tracks that are also time consuming and tricky to install.

Let’s face it, in the conversion world, style and quality has moved on but unfortunately the humble curtain well, hasn’t. Curtains can now easily spoil the overall look of the rest of your often costly conversion project. Curtains just don’t cut it in terms of thermal efficiency either and they’re just not that quick or easy to close when you need a little privacy. I’m fairly positive that there will be people who still have full-on “curtain-love” and that’s fine, everyone is entitled to choice and their opinion however, there’s no getting away from the fact that the market has moved on. Just like the loveable old “Blackberry”, the poor old curtain has sadly seen it’s day.

If you weren’t already convinced that curtains have had their day, here’s a photo of the inside of a 1967 Cadillac Hearse. If your van conversion resembles this, or your conversion company is offering you something that looks like this, then it’s time to embrace a little change and read on!

So what are the modern alternatives to camper curtains?

There’s a new and frankly quite sexy alternative to curtains for your camper conversion, namely, the VanShades Original WindowPod® system. WindowPods® are the very latest in design and come pre-installed with quality blinds, pre-carpeted if you wish and they are designed to be super easy to fit. WindowPods® can be specified as part of a new conversion by you or your conversion company, you can use them to give your van a facelift or or, you can use them to quickly and easily add-value if you’re selling your camper van. They can take years off a van!

VanShades WindowPods® (which are currently available for VW T5 vans and more models such are T4, T6 soon) solve all all of the age-old problems associated with curtains.

Instead of old dated curtain styles with rails or tracks visible, you can now have a modern, stylish, thermally efficient blinds system that’s quick and easy to fit, that looks integrated and part of your conversion and that complements your conversion rather than detracting from it.
